5 Tips To Make Halloween The Most Enjoyable For Your Child
Happy Halloween everyone! Here are 5 tips that I wanted to share with you that have helped us enjoy Halloween.
#1 Choosing a sensory friendly costume
Being realistic and having a true understanding of your child’s needs is the key to success in my opinion. Choosing a costume that may not necessarily be a “conventional costume” is ok! Nothing would be worse that choosing a costume that might be overwhelming from a sensory perspective. Your child may be completely happy with a theme t-shirt and pants.
#2 Let your child wear their costume at home before Halloween
The phrase “practice makes perfect” comes to mind. Allow your child to wear their costume at home! Let them get comfortable and make sure they can move freely and have fun in their costume!
#3 Visualize! Prepare a visual story or calendar
By using a visual story or calendar, you are essentially preparing your child for the festivities. They will have a clear understanding of what to expect which may alleviate some anxieties surrounding the disruption of their every day routine.
#4 Trick or Treat in a small group or consider alternatives
Big social settings may be overwhelming to some children. A small group or a one on one trick or treating if possible may be what makes the experience more enjoyable. I encourage you to assess your own child’s needs and make the best decision for you and your family.
#5 Allow your child to have some sensory breaks
Whatever you choose to do on Halloween, whether it’s trick or treating or visiting a friend’s house, giving your child a sensory break will help the day go smoothly for everyone!
One last tip-HAVE FUN!! Allow your child to have fun doing whatever it is that makes them happy.
Have fun and be safe!
